When we transit through below 0ºC temperature places it turns necessary to be more careful with some elements of our vehicles:
Fill with antifreeze liquid the windscreen washer deposit.
Do not use lights, radios or electronic elements with the engine stopped. The battery autonomy when temperatures are below 0º reduces to 20% of the real one, plus the aggravating fact that when it goes dead, the battery water separates from the acid and it freezes. At that point, it is impossible to recover or recharge the battery with the normal procedure.
Many manuals suggest that in this kind to situations it is recommended to press the clutch when turning on the engine. Check if your vehicle manual also gives this advice.
Bear in mind that when using the hand brake, the brake shoe and the mechanism might block, and the spring mechanisms are not enough to deactivate it.
If the door locks freeze, use hot water only.
In case it snows, carry with you tyre chains and safety elements in good conditions. Check and learn how to use the chains before having to use them.
Before departure, check if the indicators, levels, etc are under the normal values to prevent problems if we have to stop in the middle of a snowfall.
If the vehicle is equipped with ABS brakes, bear in mind that when circulating through snow, ice or other low adherence and grip surfaces, braking distances lengthen to prevent wheels blocking. In this case the brake must not be pumped, it should be pressed continuously.
If the windscreen is frozen, use antifreeze or alcohol, but never use hot water because it could break the crystal.
Try to have the fuel deposit full, the rear axle will be heavier and more stable and you will have heating a longer time in case the vehicle can not move.
