When children travel in a car, we must take certain measures to ensure safe transport. Overconfidence can be our worst enemy to all types of situations: at home, in the office, in the street and also in the car. When it comes to children, we must be extremely cautious, because their natural restlessness to discover everything makes them imitate the bad behavior they observe in adults.

Learn some basic rules for safe transportation of children and their retention in the interior of a vehicle.

Do not think that only the seats and restraint systems are the only keys to the safety and welfare of a child in a car. It is more important that kids are properly controlled and especially the adults’ shrewdness.

It is important to remember that children under 12 should ride in the back seat always. This is valid as a preventive measure for a short run (at school, for example) and one long (several hours away by road).

Do not think that it is only potentially dangerous when the car moves, it is so is when it is parked, having occurred injuries and even deaths, for example, we cite the case of a boy who was caught by the window glass of the electric locking when involuntarily someone pressed the command button and there surely can be many more cases, perhaps as many as could fit in a child’s imagination. Also think of the boys playing in the car and can get off the handbrake and move the shift lever, putting the vehicle in motion, with unpredictable results.

Incredible but true the suffocation cases and even deaths caused by excessive heat when a child is left inside with the windows closed. Imagine that it is equally possible that we move to the back seat and then get into the trunk, where the temperature will be even greater.

Although it seems not to have to do with this, attention to the following advice: Alcohol is not only our enemy while driving, it will also affect led to an error or make an unconscious decision to that effect, so if you are driving, do not drink and if you plan to drink, plan to deliver the keys to a trusted sober person.

Practical Measures

- Do not have needlestick items, toys or other objects when children are inside the vehicle. Not only can they get to distract our attention but in case of collision or sudden braking, these elements multiply your weight and can cause severe injuries. Nor is it advisable to carry heavy objects properly unhindered in the trunk.

- Parents must remain vigilant in case of windows or sunroof. Few vehicles are equipped with systems that detect the presence of something and stop the closure. Prevent children poke their head or any body part through the roof or windows.

- Never travel with briefcases or suitcases loose forward or backward. They should go in the trunk.

- Never leave a kid inside the car and less, with the windows closed. The increase in internal temperature, especially if it was parked in the sun can dehydrate the child because of the high temperature and decreased oxygen.

- The electronic keys and other controls should be accessible only to the driver.

- By stopping the vehicle, never leave the keys inserted. The hand brake must be operated and a gear shift set (first or reverse depending on the pitch). Similarly, key lock is one of the steering wheel to one side, preventing, in case of loss of parking brake, the car moves with uncertain destiny until an obstacle stops it.

- The doors should be "safe for children", which only allow the opening action from outside.

- Attention to the expiration date of the seatbelt. Along with the pin, it must be in perfect conditions and if they fail in any attempt, or has broken fibers it should be changed.

- It is not recommended to use containment mesh on the front seats as a form of child restraint because their use applies only to objects. In the event of collision or rollover, the child could rebound against the mesh and get fired from the passenger compartment.

- Pets must be accommodated in special containers or cages and never loose.

- Adults should not take children in their arms, much less the driver. Do not allow children to play freely inside the vehicle. Always use child restraint systems and seatbelts.

- When performing the "Plan Trip", we must know our good psycho-physical state, have the car mechanically updated with the revision, have all paperwork in order and carry a first aid kit equipped.
